Support For the Newly Bereaved
If you’ve recently lost a child, sibling, or grandchild, we are so sorry you are on this journey. Navigating grief is incredibly hard, and you don’t have to do it alone. The Compassionate Friends offers gentle, understanding support in a safe space where you can begin to heal. All of our services are free, and we’re here to walk beside you in whatever way feels right. Below are the support options available to you.
Whenever you're ready, we’re here.
How can we help you?
-
Lay Counselling
Our trained lay counsellors, who are bereaved parents or siblings themselves, offer free one-on-one support to others navigating grief. Sessions are available online or in person at our Highlands North centre in Johannesburg. While not professionally qualified, all lay counsellors receive training and are supported by a qualified supervisor.
-
Group Meetings
TCF hosts regular coffee mornings and support meetings on the second Saturday of every month at our Highlands North centre.
These monthly gatherings often include guest speakers or themed discussions, offering comfort through shared connection with others who understand.
-
Social Media Groups
We offer private Facebook and WhatsApp groups for bereaved parents, siblings, and grandparents. These warm, peer-led spaces offer comfort, connection, and a place to gently share and remember. Choose the group that feels right for you
-
Library
We have over 200 books in our library to assist you on your journey when you are ready to read again. You are most welcome to visit us at the Highlands North Offices and take a book free of charge and return when finished.
-
Newsletter
We provide a monthly newsletter with useful articles about grief as well as news on latest events and happenings within the organisation. In addition, we record special birth and anniversary dates to acknowledge our loved ones should you wish to be included.
